- Assistant Director – Recreation & Leisure

Pay Range: $105,000-$115,000


JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director supports the Executive Director in overseeing recreation programs, events, facility operations, and park management. This role involves managing partnerships, leading community engagement, and ensuring the effective delivery of recreational services. The Assistant Director also handles high-complexity projects, assists in budget management, ensures legal compliance, and develops staff through training and coaching. Additionally, the role includes managing the Castine Center, overseeing athletic events, and supporting the goal of achieving CAPRA Accreditation and Gold Medal Agency status.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Manage Castine Center operations and athletic events.
  • Develop and oversee budgets, pricing, and financial management for programs.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and legal requirements.
  • Lead staff training and employee development.
  • Research trends to enhance recreational offerings.
  • Administer permits and manage contracts for services and projects.
  • Represent the department in meetings and events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation or related field, plus 6 years of relevant experience.
  • CPRP or CPRE certification preferred.
  • Experience in facility and event management preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Primarily office work with outdoor duties requiring walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasional travel.

- Park Crew/Field and Grounds Maintenance Department, Starting at $16.50/hour 
The Grounds Maintenance Crew Staff is responsible for maintaining parks and recreational facilities, including but not limited to mowing, trimming, and basic landscaping. This role also involves groundskeeping of parking lots and athletic fields, managing basic irrigation systems, troubleshooting, as well as proper use and disposal of hazardous chemicals or materials. The position requires physical stamina, solid work ethics, attention to detail, and teamwork, with a strong focus on safety and environmental standards to create an enjoyable outdoor environment for the community.
 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

· Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

· Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

· Park maintenance or construction experience preferred

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Requires above average experience/knowledge of the operation of mechanical equipment such as tractors, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, etc.

· General understanding of sports athletic fields layout, terminology and preparation.

· Ability to read, write, read a tape measure and understand verbal unsupervised directions.

· Ability to communicate effectively with people, staff, and supervisors within the District organization.

· Must possess the ability to perform effectively under pressure, managing strict and unforeseen deadlines.

· Must adapt quickly, learn, and familiarize oneself with the special requirements inherent in recreation.

Part-Time Positions Available

 - Pelican Park Recreation Facility Staff, Starting at $16.50/hour

This staff works in the park in the evenings and on weekends preparing for practices and games, turning on lights, attending to restrooms, some field set up, meeting the public, answering questions and problem-solving.  This position works outside the majority of the time and requires the ability to be able to lift 50lbs.  Communicates with other staff and management on a two-way radio and takes public calls via phone.  It also requires the ability to communicate in written form.  Flexible hours.



- Castine Center Event Staff, Starting at $16.50/hour (21+)

The staff works in the Castine Center to maintain all areas of the facility in "show condition" at all times including before, during and after events. Duties include but are not limited to cleaning restrooms, removing trash from all areas of the building, cleaning and setting up tables and/or chairs, vacuuming, mopping and cleaning interior/exterior windows. Position requires the ability to lift 50lbs, communicate with other staff and management via two-way radio and communicate verbally with rental groups. This is a part-time position with the majority of scheduled hours on evenings and/or weekends.
