PNC - Butterfly Survey

What is a butterfly survey and how is it done? It is loads of fun and easy to do! As you explore the Northlake Nature Center, simply look around at everything along the trails—the plants, birds, and bugs. When you spot a butterfly, call out “butterfly!” or “what is that?” Everyone will rush over to where it is, take a look, identify the species, then write it down. Butterflies are usually found near blooming flowers where they are collecting their nectar and pollen food. We will also check out certain plants to hopefully find some caterpillars munching down on greenery to add to our report. Remember, a butterfly must first be a crawling caterpillar before it becomes a flying insect. At the end of the day, a list of the local butterflies has been documented, and the survey is complete! I’m sure all participants will enjoy learning about butterflies and their special relationship with plants.

The survey will be led by Linda "NOLA Bug Lady" Auld. You can read more about Linda here! https://www.nola.com/louisiana_inspired/monarch-butterflies-louisiana/article_3ce46a2a-c92b-11ef-ba99-afbb3e4665af.html
